YEAR
2
Term
1
We start the year with a study of the huge range of books written by the amazing Australian author, Mem Fox. We then move on to an environmental theme. The children observe the complete life cycle of the graceful tree frog as frogspawn metamorphose into tadpoles in our classroom aquarium. We release the tiny froglets into the ‘swamp’ area of the school grounds.
During this time we become very aware of the effect of pollution on our environment. Term one is also when we visit Pullenvale Environmental Educational Centre to participate in a theatrical experience ‘Muddles of Magic’. Mrs Muddle-up and the baby possum are a popular highlight of our term!
Term
2
We have a host of creepy crawlies in our classrooms as we study the life cycles of Insects! Caterpillars, Beetles and social insects, (ants and bees,) are all discussed in great detail. The children become very adept at writing information reports at this time!
We also perform fun science experiments as we learn about sound, light and heat energy
Term
3
‘Food, Food Glorious Food!’ We become culinary experts and chefs this term as we learn the importance of eating a variety of foods to keep ourselves healthy. We make soup, fruit smoothies, pancakes, vegetable dips, our own bread and finish off the unit with a picnic party where we make our own healthy lunches!
A visit to Coles supermarket at Kenmore see the children going ‘behind the scenes’ to the butchers, (where we all make sausages), the Bakery, (yummy donuts!) before we shiver our way amongst mountains of ice-cream in gigantic cold rooms.

The Focus for term four is to compare lifestyles both in the past and in the present day. We develop the theme through a study of the traditional Fairy Tales. The children enjoy stories written by the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Anderson, amongst others. Dioramas are made of their favourite scenes. We each grow a beanstalk, but luckily don’t find any giants at the top! We even get to make our own fairy tale board game and share it with our friends.
