Term

During this term the focus is on colour, shape and pattern in the environment and in the community. This includes animal and human skin, camouflage, aboriginal and European art. The children explore mathematical and
artistic concepts in nature through a variety of hands-on activities.
Term

Our unit this term focuses on simple machines and how they affect the lives of us all. Simple Machines include levers, pulleys, and wheels and axles. During this unit
the children learn many skills to help them redesign
a modern machine to give it an extra use. The results of this
task are both practical and very imaginative!
Term

Term three starts with an exciting small unit called
‘Mission Earth’ which is run through the Pullenvale
Environmental Education Centre. Students look at the features of the Earth and sky – including changes. SOSE, science, story and drama combine
to involve the children in an ‘alien’ dilemma. The
children are given an important mission that could save a distant
planet, and at the same time they gain insight into the importance
of forests on Earth. This unit culminates in an excursion to
the Pullenvale Environmental Centre where they explore the forest
and learn why conservation and preservation are the key to our
planets sustainability.
Year 3 has been nominated as our school representatives in the Values Project across the Kenmore District cluster in partnership with Pullenvale EEC. Our excursion incorporates activities from the Values project and utilizes staff from Pullenvale EEC who work with students and teachers at school prior to the day.

‘Finding Our Way’ is the title of our
last term’s unit, which explores the function and features
of maps, charts and plans. Through studying this unit the children discover how maps, charts and plans are an important and
integral part of our everyday lives. The children are given the
task of designing their own treasure maps and writing a set of
detailed directions to a buried treasure for their peers to discover.
